Stamping

Stamping (also known as pressing) is the process of placing flat sheet metal in either blank or coil form into a stamping press where a tool and die surface forms the metal into a net shape. It is a cost-effective choice for when you need to produce a medium to high volume of parts. For roll feed press work, sheet metal or coil stock runs through the machine, where a pneumatic stamping system forms it into the desired shape.Metal pressing also produces highly precise shapes through stamping, resulting in a uniform design throughout. It also minimizes material wastage and produces less scrap than metal fabrication.
One of the disadvantages of metal pressing is that you will need to manufacture the tooling first before you can start fabricating items. This means that there will be some downtime before you go into production. It is also not ideal for producing small runs of an item.
Stamping is usually done on cold metal sheet. The processes of cold stamping of metals are operations carried out in different types of machines which deform the materials to obtain parts with different shapes. During these processes, the temperature does not exceed the recrystallization of the metal, therefore it is considered cold-working. Most metals are cold-worked at room temperature although the forming reaction in them causes a temperature rise.
Cold stamping allows to work with high-strength materials that offer weight reduction solutions for final parts, and this is thanks to the fact that it improves strength, machine-ability, dimensional accuracy and finishing of surfaces.
In broad terms, these are the main processes in cold forming or cold stamping:
1. Bending

  • V-bending
  • Wipe bending

2. Cutting

  • Shearing
  • Die cutting

3. Deep drawing
There are another series of automated processes where part of these main processes coexist, such as roll forming. Roll forming is a forming process in which a sheet is progressively shaped through a series of bending operations; each roll station performs one stage in the complete bending of the sheet to form the desired profile.

Folding

Sheet metal folding is a very common forming method used to give the desired shape to structural steel, stainless steel, aluminium, etc. parts. A press brake is used to give the final shape to a part. It is important to bear in mind that bending is done after the cutting process. Metal bending is possible for sheets (up to 6 mm) as well as plates (anything above). The possibility of executing a job depends on the manufacturer’s capabilities – maximum bending edge length and pressing force. Thicker materials and longer bending lines need more force. Whereas 200-ton pressing force is enough for most jobs – it can, for example, bend a 2 m line with a 10 mm thickness – you sometimes need more. Fractory’s metal bending capabilities reach up to 1000 tons.

Sheet metal is a thin, malleable piece of metal. Since it’s so thin, we can bend it and it will keep its shape. To bend sheet metal, we simply need to squeeze it between parts that are stronger than the sheet metal.
If you have a strong metal die with a strong metal punch, you can put a piece of flat sheet metal between the two, and you’re left with a bent piece of sheet metal.
In Janee, a piece of sheet metal can get bent in a variety of different ways. It will involve a special brake tool, a customized jig, an assortment of dies and punches, an air bending machine, u-bender, or even rolling. In all of these cases, a stronger and more rigid piece of metal will be bent into specific shapes.
